SIDE KICK for EBC Team


ACCLIMATISATION AROUND NAMCHE BAZAAR (30 Oct, 2006)

ALT-1. Trekking to Thami (go to North West)

  • 3-4 hrs, 500 m ascent, 50 m descent, max Elevation 3.750m
  • A short side trip to more traditional Sherpa Village. Excellent mountain views, Point of Interest :
  • Phurte (3.390m) : forest nursery, established by Hillary’s Himalayan Trust.
  • Thamo (3.440m) : headquarters of Khumu’s electricity project
  • Somde (3.580m) : scenery to Pharchamo (6.187m) above it
  • Thami : southern is Teng Kangpoche (6.500m) and Kwangde (6.87m). Northern is police check post for trade route to Tibet
  • Thami gompa : a picturesque monastery set among the many homes o lamas and lay people.

ALT-2. Sherpa Villages of Khumbu (Northern Circuit)

  • 4-5 hrs, climbs up to 460m, max Elevation 3.850m
  • Take a day hike through the villages of Khunde and Khumjung, Point of Interest :
  • Shyangboche (3.790m ) : airstrip on high altitude
  • Khunde : hospital at top of village, maintained by Himalayan Trust
  • Khumjung : largest village in Khumbu, at foot of the sacred peak Khumbila (5.761m)
  • Khumjung School (3.780m) : orginaly Hillary school and expanded by Himalayan Trust included a high school.

ACCLIMATISATION AROUND DINGBOCHE (2 Nov, 2006)

ALT-1. Half Day Trekking to Nangkartshang gompa

  • A climb of 400m above the village. From this vantage point there is good view east to Makalu (8.463m) – 5th highest mountain in the world.

ALT-2. Half Day Trekking to Ama Dablam Lakes (4.700m)

ALT-3. Trekking to Chhukung (4.750m)

  • Hike up to the Imja Valley for another two hours past from Bibre to Chhukung – a small summer settlement at 4.730m.
  • View towards Island Peak – Imja Tse (6.189m)
  • South face of Lhotse tower above to the north, while Amphu Lapcha (1 5.780m pass) and the immense fluted ice walls that flank it dominated the horizon to the south.
  • To south west, the eastern face of Ama Dablam.
  • If possible daytrip to lower peak of Chukhung Ri (5.417m) or the high peak (5.559m). OR even better to Chukkung Tse (5.857m)
